Non-Wires Alternatives

Moving Toward the Interactive Grid of the Future

We are committed to considering Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) solutions to electric capital investments where they are appropriate and cost-effective. NWA solutions utilize Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to postpone certain traditional construction projects needed primarily to correct system overloading conditions and in some cases, system reliability issues.

Our strategy for NWA is to build a portfolio of NWA DER projects which are cost-effective for our customers, provide reliable alternatives to traditional capital investment projects, and provide full cost recovery and earnings opportunities for our companies, while we comply with regulatory directives and learn from and work cooperatively with stakeholders.

Greater Augusta Non-Wires Alternatives

The Greater Augusta Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) Request for Proposal (RFP) seeks responses from qualified and experienced respondents with the capability to deliver innovative solutions to support grid reliability and capacity needs in the South China and Winthrop areas of Maine during planned maintenance outages and other service interruptions. CMP is issuing this RFP for resources which will defer or eliminate the need for portions of a traditional wires project for planned substation upgrades at the South China and Puddledock substations. NWA solutions would be located at the South China and Winthrop substations. An RFP requesting NWA solutions was issued in August 2019.
