Reliability Upgrades

Section 28

Project Overview

As part of our commitment to provide safe, reliable service to all our customers, Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is replacing a transmission structure that is aging on an island in Great Salt Bay and is upgrading the poles on the water’s edge in Damariscotta.

CMP is working with the communities and will reach out to neighbors along the line to ensure that all improvements are performed safely and with minimal disruption to their daily lives, their communities, and the environment.

Project Purpose and Need

CMP’s transmission line Section 28 is a radial 34.5kV line that travels 10 miles from the Damariscotta Mills Substation to the Bristol Substation, meeting the energy needs of approximately 4,300 customers in Newcastle, Bristol, parts of Damariscotta, and neighboring villages. This line crosses Great Salt Bay between Newcastle and Damariscotta with a wood pole H-frame structure on a small island. The island structure, built in 1967, is aging and in need of replacement to ensure reliable service.

The project will begin in July and will continue until November, at the latest. A new wood structure approximately 17 feet taller above ground will be built in line with the existing, structure, existing conductors will be transferred to the new structure, and the existing structure will be taken down and removed from the island. Modernized federal requirements related to electric reliability and the safety of the public in waterbodies are the reasons for the increased pole height.

To accommodate the island structure’s increased height, three new anchors will be installed on a three-pole structure located near Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust’s Salt Bay Farm and Nature Center in Damariscotta.
