Power Restored to 120,000 Customers as 478 Crews Continue Work

Progress builds on Sunday’s restoration of transmission system, substations, as well as schools, hospitals, and businesses

Augusta, ME — March 25, 2024 — On Monday, 478-line crews continued to work restoring power to the remaining 82,000 customers impacted by Saturday’s significant ice storm. Beginning overnight Saturday, CMP crews have addressed widespread damage to the grid, rebuilt critical infrastructure, and restored power to 120,000 of the 202,000 customers impacted by this storm.

One objective achieved Sunday was the full restoration of CMP’s transmission system, which included a line that feeds large sections of South Portland, Portland and Westbrook. CMP also restored power to numerous businesses and health care facilities along the Route 1 corridor.

“This storm hit the heart of many of Maine’s most densely populated communities,” said Jon Breed, spokesperson for Central Maine Power. “We appreciate our customer’s patience as we get large, essential pieces of our grid back online.”

Several communities CMP serves opened warming shelters as this restoration effort continues. A list of the centers can be found on the Maine Emergency Management Agency’s website here.

Given the numerous downed lines in populated areas of our state, CMP is also urging everyone to stay far away from these lines and to not touch them under any circumstances.

In every storm, CMP assists local emergency management agencies should road closures occur and, for safety, CMP crews are prohibited from raising bucket trucks when windspeeds are greater than 30 mph.

Customers can report outages quickly and easily, and track restoration times using the CMP mobile app. Download from the App Store or text APP to 267898 for a downloadable link. Customers may also enroll in Outage Alerts to stay informed in the event they lose power.
