Crews Set 3,000th Structure for CMP’s Transmission Project
AUGUSTA, Maine, May 22, 2013 — Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, has reached yet another major milestone in its Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP), a $1.4 billion upgrade of CMP’s bulk electric transmission system in Maine. Crews set the 3000th transmission structure earlier this month, putting CMP beyond the halfway point in the effort to set more than 5,000 structures for the project.
“Setting our 3,000th structure represents a significant milestone for this important project,” said Doug Herling, vice president of Special Projects for CMP and executive sponsor of the MPRP. “Every day, thousands of men and women complete hundreds of tasks necessary to build a stronger, smarter grid for Maine. We have now passed the halfway mark toward completion of one of the biggest construction projects in Maine’s history.”
The structure set earlier this month in Frankfort, about 15 miles south of Bangor, is a part of the new Section 254, a bundled H-frame 115kV transmission line which interconnects a new CMP substation under construction in Windsor with the Orrington Substation in Orrington. The transmission line traverses 54 miles through 14 communities in an existing transmission corridor.
Central Maine Power Company’s MPRP is a $1.4 billion investment in Maine’s bulk power transmission system. The most significant upgrade in more than four decades, the MRPP will ensure continued grid reliability and improved access to the region’s bulk power system for the state’s growing renewable and non-renewable energy industries. The five-year project includes the construction of four new substations with 345 kV autotransformers, one 345 kV switchyard, plus upgrades to more than 40 existing substations, and the installation or rebuilding of nearly 440 miles of transmission line in 75 communities from Eliot to Orrington. Since the start of construction in 2010, the MPRP has provided a timely stimulus to the Maine economy, employing nearly 2,700 workers among contractors, consultants and suppliers, plus as many as 900 more jobs through indirect and induced employment spurred by the construction spending. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
