CMP alerts customers to phone scam

 

AUGUSTA, Maine, June 24, 2010 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is warning customers not to fall for a scam in which a caller claiming to be from the utility is seeking payment information.


Several local automobile dealerships and repair facilities have reported receiving calls advising them that a payment to CMP had been misapplied. The customers were asked to fax copies of the front and back of their checks to a specific toll-free number. If the customer starts to question the caller, the caller advises them to call CMP’s toll-free customer service number at 1-800-565-3181. While the latter phone number is legitimate, the fax number the caller provided is not a CMP number.


“So far, reports of these calls have involved a small number of customers in a particular line of business,” says CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “But we want to put all of our customers – commercial and residential – are on alert to protect their information about financial and utility accounts.”


CMP urges its customers not to give out bank account information to anyone who claims to be calling from the company. CMP has the information it needs to discuss a customer’s account and would not ask for the customer to supply that information. Any customer who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to call one of the company’s toll-free customer service lines themselves to ensure they are dealing with an authorized CMP representative. Those numbers are 1-800-750-4000 for residential customers and 1-800-565-3181 for business customers.
