CMP completes work at Hartland Substation

New equipment will improve service in area

AUGUSTA, Maine, June 18, 2008 — Central Maine Power Co. has successfully completed maintenance and upgrades at the utility’s substation in Hartland. The work that took place earlier this month involved maintenance to a large transformer, installation of new lightning arrestors and insulators, and other work that will optimize station operations.

“These improvements will ensure CMP can continue to provide the efficient and reliable power-delivery service that Maine residents and businesses rely on,” says CMP spokesman John Carroll.

To minimize inconvenience to customers, CMP first consulted with major businesses and scheduled the work during their idle time. The project began at around 3 a.m. Sunday, June 1, when crews switched the load at the Hartland substation to a mobile unit. They worked through the night and much of Sunday to complete the transformer maintenance and equipment installation, then switched the load back from the mobile unit to the Hartland substation Sunday afternoon.

“The mobile substation allows us to keep delivering power to homes and businesses while we perform this vital maintenance,” says Carroll. “The disruptions to customers during the switching process were very brief — each was less than three minutes.”

CMP plans similar work to other substations across its 11,000-square-mile service area this year. In addition to the maintenance described above, CMP plans to invest an estimated $160 million in major system upgrades to prepare the system for growing demand in the future.
