CMP Works Overnight to Repair System Damage Caused by Severe Thunderstorms 07-13-2022

York, Cumberland Counties most impacted

AUGUSTA, ME—July 13, 2022 – Central Maine Power (CMP) crews worked overnight to assess and repair system damage caused by locally severe thunderstorms where downed trees and limbs caused outages, particularly in York County. They expect to complete restoration today. Peak outages from the storm reached to about 14,620 with an additional 3900 outages caused by a car accident in Piscataquis County.

“This morning we have 200 lineworkers who are joined by 60 contractor lineworkers and additional tree crews and we have moved most of them into York County this morning where they will continue to repair and restore power in the hardest hit areas,” said Adam Desrosiers, vice president Electric Operations for CMP. “The localized damage was tremendous, and we are working steadily to get the power back to those remaining customers who were impacted.”

This morning, outages stood at about 1600. CMP expects it could be mid-day before some areas such as Limington, where system damage was particularly severe, are fully restored.

In a storm, making local areas safe from any downed wires or debris is always a top priority. CMP coordinates with the Maine Emergency Management Agency, County Emergency Management agencies, and local municipalities to understand local restoration priorities and any safety concerns.

CMP reminds customers to remember the following if they have lost power:

  • Stay away from downed lines. No line is safe to touch.
  • Turn off or unplug major appliance and sensitive electronics.
  • Never use range or outdoor stoves to heat your home.
  • If you need shelter or food, reach out to 211 for available resource.

If you lose service

  • To report an outage, visit Outage Central . Customers may also report an outage using CMP’s 24/7 automated phone system at 800.696.1000.
  • Keep sensitive electronic appliances such as computers, TVs and stereos plugged into a surge protector, or unplug them. They could be damaged if a power surge occurs when electricity is restored.

For customers with generators

  • Hire a licensed electrician to install permanent generators and transfer switches.
  • Properly ground all portable generators.
  • Carefully read and observe all instructions in your generator’s operating manual.
  • Never run a generator indoors, or even in an open garage.
  • If your carbon monoxide detector goes off – get out of the building immediately and call 911.
  • Do not store fuel indoors or try to refuel a generator while it’s running.
