CMP Visits SMCC Electric Engineering Technologies Classes
Presentations and demonstrations focused on grid operation, the role of CMP’s Substations division and career opportunities.
SOUTH PORTLAND, ME — March 7, 2024 — This week, representatives from CMP’s Substations and Community Relations departments spoke on-campus to dozens of Southern Maine Community College students about a wide variety of topics related to the electric utility industry.
They took questions from students about the hundreds of different career paths at CMP, how substations form a fundamental part of Maine’s electric grid and how the various divisions of the company work together to ensure safe, reliable operation of the CMP system.
"Facilitating on-campus visits from industry partners provides our students with invaluable insights into their prospective career journeys," SMCC Vice President and Academic Dean Paul Charpentier said. "Our overarching objective is to immerse our students in real-world experiences, and we sincerely appreciate partners like CMP for providing our students with substantial information to help shape and guide their future endeavors."
“These students were enthusiastic and we can’t wait to see the impact they’ll make in STEM careers across our state,” said Marc Worrell, Senior Manager of Substations for CMP and one of the presenters to the SMCC classes. “We hope many of them apply for open roles we have or will have in the future, following in the footsteps of many longtime CMP employees who got their start in this industry in Maine’s community colleges.”
For decades, CMP has been a steadfast supporter of programs in the Maine Community College System such as its lineworker training program developed in conjunction with Kennebec Valley Community College.
Similar presentations to the ones in classes this week are planned for later in March in other communities and include informational sessions with students from Capital Area Technical Center in Augusta, Bath Regional Career and Technical Center, Waldo County Technical Center and Thomas College.
