Company clarifies recent media coverage on Buckfield fire station

AUGUSTA, ME — July 10, 2021 — 
CMP is deeply concerned about our customer, the Town of Buckfield, and recent media coverage suggesting we intended to disconnect power to a critical emergency safety facility. We had no plan to disconnect any part of the town facilities, nor will we at any point in the future – in Buckfield or elsewhere – ever disconnect critical safety facilities.

Media coverage, and well-meaning officials in Buckfield, have misinterpreted our efforts to maintain contact with the community and determine a path forward to help bring the town’s accounts current. Our customer service people tried numerous times to contact the Town of Buckfield, and when we could not reach them via phone or email, a CMP employee visited in person to check in and understand the challenges. At NO POINT was the suggestion of power disconnection made. Still, we apologize to the town and its residents for any concern our visit caused. Our goal is always a positive customer experience and clearly, we missed the mark here. We are investigating processes and procedures and will reinforce these with employees immediately.

To be clear, again: Central Maine Power will not ever disconnect a fire station, police station or other critical municipal safety facility. Our practice is to call and / or email municipal customers, and if unable to reach them, send an employee to the location to discuss the account and offer assistance. Our municipal leaders are extremely busy people and valued customers, and we try to maintain an ongoing dialogue with them to ensure we are meeting local needs. We will work harder to prioritize communication with all our valued municipal customers, to avoid this type of misunderstanding in the future.
