CMP Shares Energy Tips to Help Customers Manage Summer Costs
Free digital tools like CMP’s Energy Manager and Usage Alerts can help customers stay in control as temperatures rise
Augusta, ME – June 11, 2026 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., is sharing tips and resources to help customers manage their energy use and control costs during the warmer summer months. As temperatures rise, so does energy consumption and CMP is committed to helping customers stay informed and save where they can. This week alone, a number of Maine communities are experiencing temperatures in the mid to upper 80s.
“Summer can bring higher energy use for many families, but there are simple steps you can take right now to help manage those costs,” said Linda Ball, President and CEO of Central Maine Power. “Last summer, demand reached a 5-year record daily high here in Maine– so, we know how important it is to stay ahead of your energy use. Small changes like adjusting your thermostat or being mindful of when and how you use appliances can really add up. Our goal is to give customers the tools and information they need to make smart choices and stay comfortable all season long.”
Hot weather can cause air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers to work harder, increasing electricity use. Older or poorly maintained systems may consume even more energy. Additionally, seasonal appliances such as fans and pool pumps contribute to higher overall energy demand.
To help improve efficiency and reduce costs, CMP encourages customers to take a few simple steps:
- Clean or replace air filters monthly to ensure proper airflow and efficiency
- Clean vents annually to prevent buildup and improve system performance
- Check for insulation gaps and seal leaks to prevent cool air from escaping
- Close curtains or shades during hot, sunny days to keep interiors cooler
- Be mindful of increased energy use when more people are home during summer months
- For heat pumps, “set it and forget it” to maintain a consistent temperature rather than turning the system on and off

Humidity also plays a role in higher energy use, as air conditioners and dehumidifiers must run longer to maintain comfort levels. Cooling your home can account for a significant portion of summer energy use.
CMP offers free digital tools designed to give customers greater insight and control over their energy use:
- Usage Alerts – Customers can sign up through their online account to receive weekly updates via text, phone, or email showing weekly energy use and estimated costs. Customers can also set a usage or dollar target and receive an alert if the target is exceeded.
- Energy Manager – This tool provides daily energy usage data, breaks down usage by category (such as heating, lighting, and cooking), and compares usage with similar households to help customers make informed decisions.
CMP understands that higher summer bills can be challenging. Programs may be available to assist eligible customers, including:
- The Electricity Lifeline Program
- The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
- Home Weatherization programs through Efficiency Maine Trust
Customers are encouraged to visit CMP’s Help with Bill page to learn more about available assistance programs.
