CMP Responds to Outages Caused by Gusty Winds
Winds expected to impact Maine through early evening
AUGUSTA, ME — March 2, 2021, 2021 — Central Maine Power (CMP) is responding to power outages caused by gusty winds across its service area today. Assisted by 130 contractors, CMP has approximately 200 field workers and 150 tree workers repairing outages primarily caused by tree damage to power lines.
Strong wind gusts, often approaching 45-50 mph have been blowing across Maine overnight, and forecasts call for the wind to continue until dusk. In addition to high winds, field workers are facing wind-chill temperatures below zero as they work today.
“With the wind gusts as strong as they are, we must be very vigilant about safety today,” said Kerri Therriault, director Electric Operations for CMP. “We are responding to outages as quickly as we can, however we cannot send our field crews up to the power lines in buckets when wind gusts are dangerously high. We are also working closely with local Emergency Management officials to ensure roads are cleared of any downed wires.”
The wind storm is impacting the entire CMP service area and crews will be restoring power through the day. As of 10:00 am the company was reporting close to 42,000 outages.
CMP offers storm preparation tips and a checklist on our website cmpco.com.
CMP reminds customers to remember the following if they have lost power:
- Stay away from downed lines. No line is safe to touch.
- Turn off or unplug major appliance and sensitive electronics.
- Never use range or outdoor stoves to heat your home.

CMP continues to observe all COVID-19 safety protocols in storm response including:
