CMP Progresses on Power Restoration Sunday

Resources shift to areas hit hardest by snowstorm

AUGUSTA, ME – December 18, 2022 – Central Maine Power has more than 1,500 line and tree workers spread across the service area today, or nearly triple the normal workforce, having added an additional 600 workers to the system who arrived in the State last night. The company continues to restore power for customers impacted by the winter snowstorm that hit the area Friday and Saturday. A total of 122,000 customers lost power in the storm and as of 9:00 AM Sunday approximately 72,000 had been restored. As restoration progresses across the service area, CMP will shift more resources to Oxford and Androscoggin Counties, areas hit hardest by the storm.

“For those customers who remain without power we are focused today on providing estimates of when they will be restored as we are making system repairs,” said Kerri Therriault, senior director, Electric Operations. “While the heavy snow still creates some hazards on the system, with the improvement in the road conditions we are able to move more quickly and efficiently today to investigate remaining system damage and communicate restoration estimates to customers and make repairs.”

CMP is focused on ensuring all schools and other critical facilities have power.

Customers may find storm preparation tips and a checklist on the CMP website.

Customers may download the mobile CMP app at the App Store enabling them to report outages quickly and easily, and track restoration times. They may also enroll online in Outage Alerts to stay current in the event they lose power.

CMP reminds customers to remember the following if they have lost power:

  • Stay away from downed lines. No line is safe to touch.
  • Turn off or unplug major appliance and sensitive electronics.
  • Never use range or outdoor stoves to heat your home.
  • If you need shelter or food, reach out to 211 for available resource.

If you lose service:

For customers with generators:

  • Hire a licensed electrician to install permanent generators and transfer switches.
  • Properly ground all portable generators.
  • Carefully read and observe all instructions in your generator’s operating manual.
  • Never run a generator indoors, or even in an open garage.
  • If your carbon monoxide detector goes off – get out of the building immediately and call 911.
  • Do not store fuel indoors or try to refuel a generator while it’s running.
  • Refer to CMP’s web page on generator safety.
