CMP Prepared for Extreme Heat

Company highlights ways to save on energy usage as field crews prepare for forecasted 90-degree temperatures

Augusta, ME – June 30, 2026 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., is sharing tips, resources, and digital tools to help customers manage energy use and control costs with an Extreme Heat Watch issued for much of the CMP service area. When temperatures rise, so can electricity use, with more customers relying on air conditioners, fans, and other cooling equipment to stay comfortable.

“With the potential for dangerous heat, we want to remind our customers to stay safe and prepare now. That includes taking advantage of our free digital tools to help manage energy use and stay in control of costs,” said Linda Ball, President and CEO of Central Maine Power. “In the field, our hardworking crews are preparing to respond safely and quickly through the forecasted hot weather to maintain reliable service for our customers. This includes coordinating with local communities to ensure cooling centers that open are identified and prioritized.”

This period of forecasted higher temperatures also coincides with a bill decrease for CMP customers. Beginning on July 1, the average CMP monthly residential electric bill will decrease by approximately $11.

This decrease is occurring because:

  • CMP’s 2025 Annual Compliance Filing (ACF) was approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) in June. This approval completes the recovery of storm repair costs from prior years, resulting in an approximately $8 reduction on residential bills.
  • Efficiency Maine Trust (EMT) costs are being adjusted downward. These are non-CMP public policy charges that are required by law that fund energy efficiency programs including product rebates and home upgrades. This results in an approximately $3 reduction on residential bills.
  • During periods of extreme heat, air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers must work harder to maintain temperatures, which can increase customer energy usage. Older or poorly maintained equipment may consume even more energy. Seasonal appliances such as air conditioners and dehumidifiers can also contribute to higher use, especially during periods of high humidity.

To help improve efficiency and reduce costs, CMP encourages customers to take a few simple steps:

  • Clean or replace air filters regularly to improve airflow and efficiency.
  • Clean vents annually to improve system performance.
  • Check for insulation gaps and seal air leaks to keep cool air inside.
  • Close curtains, blinds, or shades during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Be mindful that additional household activity during summer months may increase energy use.
  • For heat pumps, “set it and forget it” by maintaining a consistent temperature rather than frequently adjusting settings.

To give customers greater insight into their energy use and help them make informed decisions, CMP offers free digital tools such as:

  • Usage Alerts – Customers can sign up through their online account to receive weekly updates via text, phone, or email showing weekly energy use and estimated costs. Customers can also set a usage or dollar target and receive an alert if the target is exceeded.
  • Energy Manager – This tool provides daily energy usage data, breaks down usage by category (such as heating, lighting, and cooking), and compares usage with similar households to help customers make informed decisions.

CMP understands that higher summer bills can be challenging. Programs may be available to assist eligible customers, including:

  • The Electricity Lifeline Program
  • The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
  • Home Weatherization programs through Efficiency Maine Trust

Customers are encouraged to visit CMP’s Help with Bill page to learn more about available assistance programs.
