CMP Modernizing Westbrook Substation
Westbrook, ME — May 9, 2025 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., announced that crews are making significant progress modernizing a decades-old substation in Westbrook serving more than 6,100 of the utility’s customers.
These improvements include the installation of a new transformer that was moved into the substation site in the Pride’s Corner area of the city on Wednesday morning using a large crane. Today, crews are placing the transformer, which weighs 105,000 pounds, into its final location in the substation and are beginning the formal installation process.
This new transformer replaces another one that was approximately 50 years-old and will alleviate energy capacity constraints at this facility, allowing more energy to flow through.
“Adding roughly 40% more capacity to this substation with this new infrastructure will prepare this area of Greater Portland for years of future growth,” said Eric Sutton, Vice President of Electric Operations for CMP. “We’re proud to take this and other proactive steps forward to build the 21st century grid Mainers are using for critical parts of everyday life like education, healthcare, going to work and heating their homes.”
This substation modernization project is one of several currently ongoing across communities CMP serves including upgrades at a substation in Scarborough that will benefit more than 16,500 customers in South Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth.
