CMP Installs More than 100 Smart Devices In Under Six Months

Devices now benefiting more than 22,000 customers across CMP’s service area.

Augusta, ME — May 28, 2025 — Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., today announced that more than 22,000 of its customers now have more reliable service after more than 100 smart devices were installed on the company’s grid so far in 2025.

Specifically, these devices allow staff in CMP’s Energy Control Center (ECC) to remotely direct power around damaged sections of line. This can restore service for customers who experience a power outage in as little as five minutes.

“Investing in a dynamic, 21st century energy grid means more of our customers get power back quickly if they’re impacted by an outage,” said Eric Sutton, Vice President of Electric Operations for CMP. “In some cases where these devices have been successful, we’re restoring service for customers in mere minutes when they would have otherwise waited an hour or more for our crews to reach remote locations and make repairs.”

More than 35 of the devices added in April and May were installed in Cumberland and York County communities including: Hollis, Brunswick, Saco, York, Wells, Yarmouth, Limerick, Freeport, Standish and Gorham.

Adding this technology to lines across Maine is one of many initiatives underway at CMP to strengthen Maine’s energy grid in the face of extreme storms. Other initiatives include installing covered wire that protects lines from tree damage and the use of taller, thicker wooden utility poles.

Later in 2025, additional smart devices are planned for installation in Lisbon, Ogunquit and South Portland.
