CMP Installs 45 Smart Devices in First Three Months of 2025
Devices now benefiting more than 8,500 customers across CMP’s service area.
Augusta, ME — April 2, 2025 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., announced that more than 8,500 customers will see the benefit of more reliable service after dozens of new smart devices were installed on the energy grid during the first three months of 2025.
Specifically, these devices, called automated reclosers, allow staff in CMP’s Energy Control Center (ECC) to remotely redirect power if damage occurs to powerlines. This enhanced capability can allow CMP to restore power to customers in as little as five minutes.
“These advanced technologies are directly benefitting customers by allowing our crews to improve response times, reduce outage durations, and minimize the number of customers impacted by an outage,” said Eric Sutton, Vice President of Electric Operations for CMP. “This is just the beginning. By the end of the year, we plan to install hundreds more of these automatic switches onto the grid to better serve our customers, especially during storms.”
The majority of the 45 smart devices CMP installed between January and March are in Maine coastal communities including Brunswick, Topsham, Bath, Woolwich, Damariscotta, Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor. Devices were also installed in Scarborough, Windham, Westbrook, Standish and Lisbon.
Recent success stories have highlighted the benefits of automated reclosers for thousands of CMP customers. This includes the restoration of power to 2,800 homes and businesses in the Norway and Woodstock areas. In this case, power was restored to customers in under three minutes.
