CMP Gears up for Second Storm this Week
More windy weather and freezing rain expected late Saturday
AUGUSTA, ME— December 10, 2021 – MP is preparing to finish the week the way it started, responding to potential outages that could come as a result of high wind gusts along the coast. Forecasts also predict freezing rain for other parts of the state. The company is preparing to stage CMP line workers, contractors and tree crews Saturday afternoon to respond to safety concerns and outages into Sunday.
“Like we did early this week, we are preparing to respond to any outages that could come as a result of more high wind gusts,” said Adam Desrosiers, Vice President Electric Operations for CMP. “We have contacted local Emergency Management Agency officials to coordinate on safety priorities should we need to clear debris overnight and we encourage customers to prepare as well.”
High wind gusts can cause trees from outside CMP’s allowed trimming area to topple and branches to fall on power lines, causing the vast majority of power outages. Trees and lines weighted down by freezing rain create a higher risk for outages.
Check our website for storm preparation tips and a checklist: www.cmpco.com. Customers may use online tools to monitor and report outages, and sign up for text alerts.
Safety tips in a power outage:
- Stay away from downed lines. No line is safe to touch.
- Turn off or unplug major appliance and sensitive electronics.
- Never use range or outdoor stoves to heat your home.
- If you need shelter or food, reach out to 211 for available resource.
If you lose service:

- Keep sensitive electronic appliances such as computers, TVs and stereos plugged into a surge protector, or unplug them. They could be damaged if a power surge occurs when electricity is restored.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. For information about food safety, visit http://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/refridg_food.html.
For customers with generators:
- Hire a licensed electrician to install permanent generators and transfer switches.
- Properly ground all portable generators.
- Carefully read and observe all instructions in your generator’s operating manual.
- Never run a generator indoors, or even in an open garage.
- If your carbon monoxide detector goes off – get out of the building immediately and call 911.
