CMP Enhances Power Reliability for Bath, Phippsburg Customers

AUGUSTA, ME — March 18, 2022 —  Central Maine Power (CMP) customers in Bath and Phippsburg can expect increased power reliability as the company completes an upgrade to a critical substation on the corner of Washington and Castine Streets in Bath. The newly constructed 12 kV substation produces a higher voltage, which increases energy reliability and was built to withstand flooding that increasingly occurs in the area.

“Investing in grid reliability is a top priority for CMP,” said CMP president and CEO, Joe Purington. “We’re working to build a stronger, smarter grid for Mainers, especially as climate impacts like flooding continue to test our grid’s resiliency, so improvements to substations like this one in Bath are key to ensuring our customers have the safe and reliable power they expect and deserve.”

By placing energized conductors and equipment eight feet higher off the surface of the substation, elevating the control house that contains key components, and moving underground feeder cables overhead, the new substation will better withstand flooding.

Construction on the facility began in August 2020 and was supported by Maine-based contractors including Cianbro.

Bath Iron Works was a key partner in the upgrade as CMP worked with them to ensure their operations were not affected by power reductions while the construction activity was ongoing.
