CMP Customers to See Monthly Decrease

As of July 1, 2026, charges on the delivery portion of bills are decreasing.

CMP charges now less than half of costs on electric bills.

Augusta, ME – July 1, 2026 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid Inc., today announced that the average monthly residential electric bill is decreasing by approximately $11 on July 1, 2026.

This decrease is occurring because:

  • CMP’s 2025 Annual Compliance Filing (ACF) was approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) in June. This approval completes the recovery of storm repair costs from prior years, resulting in an approximately $8 reduction on residential delivery bills.

  • Efficiency Maine Trust (EMT) costs are being adjusted downward. These are non-CMP public policy charges that are required by law that fund energy efficiency programs including product rebates and home upgrades. This results in an approximately $3 reduction on residential bills.

With this change, the majority of costs customers are paying on electric bills are going to entities other than CMP.  52% of the bill is made up of non-CMP supply and public policy charges while CMP transmission and distribution charges represent the other 48%. This means that more than half of electric bills is outside of CMP’s control.

Unregulated supply costs (45% of bills) are paid to third-party companies that generate electricity. In January 2026, these costs increased by approximately $11 per month for a residential CMP customer with average usage who selected the Standard Offer. This year’s Standard Offer providers are NextEra Energy Marketing LLC, New Brunswick Energy Marketing Corporation, and Constellation Energy Commodities Group Maine LLC.  CMP has not owned power plants since 2000 when Maine deregulated electricity generation.

Public policy costs (7% of bills) are charges that fund various programs, a number of which are state-required.

These include:

  • Stranded Costs – Funds past utility assets after deregulation of supply market.

  • Net Energy Billing – Funds payments for primarily solar programs.

  • Energy Efficiency – Funds energy efficiency programs and EMT.

  • Customer Assistance Programs – Funds programs to help customers manage bills.

CMP’s transmission and distribution delivery costs represent the costs to perform all the tasks related to the company’s role maintaining and operating the electric grid. This includes distribution charges for the local poles, lines and equipment that deliver power to homes and businesses. It also includes transmission charges for the lines that move large amounts of electricity across state lines and regions.

“With summer cooling season ramping up this week, this decrease is coming at a helpful time for our customers when they might be using more energy,” said CMP spokesperson, Dustin Wlodkowski. “We remain focused on balancing affordability today with affordability into the future, and we’re here to help customers better understand their bills, their energy use, and the free tools available that can help manage costs. While your e-bill may come from us or your bill’s return address may say CMP, most of what our customers are paying is now being passed through our company to other entities.”

CMP offers customers a number of free ways to learn about their usage, take control and lower their energy costs:

  • Sign Up for Usage Alerts – Through your online account, you can sign up for alerts via text, phone or email. These can update you with your weekly usage and its estimated cost. You can also set a usage target for yourself and receive an alert if you exceed your target.
