CMP Crews Responding to Restore Power in Winter Storm

Wet snow and winds create outages

AUGUSTA, ME – December 17, 2022 – Central Maine Power (CMP) crews, assisted by contractors have been responding to restore power outages created by the first major winter snowstorm of the season. Heavy, wet snow and winds have caused outages, particularly in southern and central Maine, impacting 72,000 customers. As of 9:00 AM, approximately 56,000 customers are without power.

“We have 200 CMP lineworkers, 220 contractor lineworkers, and 238 tree workers out on the system now with approximately 90 additional contractor lineworkers arriving later today. We also have 28 digger trucks used to replace broken utility poles,” said Kerri Therriault, senior director, Electric Operations. “We will be moving crews into the hardest hit areas throughout the day, and they will be out working until every customer is restored.”

Drivers are urged to use caution on slippery roads, particularly when crews are at work on the roadside.

Customers may find storm preparation tips and a checklist on the CMP website.

Customers may download the mobile CMP app at the App Store enabling them to report outages quickly and easily, and track restoration times. They may also enroll online in Outage Alerts to stay current in the event they lose power.

CMP reminds customers to remember the following if they have lost power:

  • Turn off or unplug major appliance and sensitive electronics.
  • Never use range or outdoor stoves to heat your home.

  • Properly ground all portable generators.
  • Carefully read and observe all instructions in your generator’s operating manual.
  • Never run a generator indoors, or even in an open garage.
  • If your carbon monoxide detector goes off – get out of the building immediately and call 911.
