CMP and Marine Mammals of Maine Celebrate Partnership with Sponsorship of Rescued Seal, Current
For the fourth year, CMP is supporting marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation efforts while engaging employees in hands-on conservation work.
AUGUSTA, ME – August 18, 2026 – Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid, Inc., is proud to introduce Current, the company's 2026 sponsored harbor seal, through its ongoing partnership with Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). For the fourth consecutive year, CMP is supporting MMoME's mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine mammals while providing employees with opportunities to engage firsthand in conservation efforts along Maine's coastline.
As part of the partnership, a group of CMP employees recently spent the day at MMoME's Brunswick facility learning about marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation while assisting with animal care activities, including feeding rescued seals and helping care for Current.
Current was the first harbor seal pup reported to MMoME's hotline in 2026. Found in Kennebunkport at less than 24 hours old, the fragile newborn was stranded on a busy beach and showed signs of maternal separation. Underweight and exhausted, Current was brought to MMoME's rehabilitation center, where he received specialized care and support.
Today, Current has regained his strength and developed the skills needed to thrive in the wild. MMoME reports he is expected to be released back into his natural habitat soon.
Since 2023, CMP has partnered with MMoME to support marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation efforts across Maine. Through the partnership, CMP has sponsored the rehabilitation of several rescued seals, including Breaker in 2023, Amp in 2024, Circuit in 2025, and now Current in 2026. Each seal has been named by CMP employees, creating a unique connection between employees and MMoME's conservation mission.
"Our partnership with Marine Mammals of Maine gives employees a firsthand look at the impact their support can have on wildlife conservation in Maine," said Katie Yates, Director of Community Relations for Central Maine Power. "From helping care for rescued seals to participating in the naming of animals like Current, employees build a meaningful connection to MMoME's mission. We're proud to support the organization's important work protecting marine life, educating the public, and responding to animals in need."
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to protecting Maine's natural resources while strengthening the communities that depend on them. In addition to sponsoring seal rehabilitation efforts, CMP supported MMoME's mission as a sponsor of the organization's 2025 Ocean Commotion 5K, its largest annual fundraising event.
"Our partnership with Central Maine Power reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Maine communities and protecting Maine's marine mammals," said Lynda Doughty, Executive Director of Marine Mammals of Maine. "Over the years, CMP and Avangrid employees have rolled up their sleeves to support our mission in many ways, from yard work and tree care to sorting fish for seals in rehabilitation. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and genuine connection demonstrate the impact people can make when they come together with a common purpose. CMP and the Avangrid Foundation's support helps us respond to marine mammals along Maine's coastline, rehabilitate seals in need, and educate the public about these sentinel species. We are grateful for a partnership that continues to make a meaningful difference for Maine's marine mammals and coastal communities."
Marine Mammals of Maine responds to marine mammal and sea turtle strandings statewide, providing rescue, rehabilitation, research, and educational outreach that help protect Maine's coastal ecosystems.
