Central Maine Power Joins Electric Highway Coalition to Explore Expanded EV Charging Opportunities

AUGUSTA, ME — July 29, 2021 — Central Maine Power (CMP), along with its parent company AVANGRID, Inc., announced today that they have joined the Electric Highway Coalition. As a member, AVANGRID and CMP will collaborate with neighboring utilities to enable long distance electric vehicle (EV) travel through a network of charging stations connecting major highway systems.

“At CMP, we are committed to helping Maine meet its clean energy goals,” said CMP Interim President, Scott Mahoney. “As part of the AVANGRID family, we have the benefit of learning from our sister companies and the backing of AVANGRID to explore new and innovative ways to help create a cleaner future for Maine. Through our participation in this coalition, we have the opportunity to collaborate with other members as we consider future opportunities to support the development of DC fast chargers in our state.”

The Electric Highway Coalition was formed in March 2021 and is committed to growing corridor EV charging solutions within member’s service territories to ensure EV drivers have convenient charging options and seamless travel routes. Its members will work together to ensure efficient and effective fast charging deployment plans that enable long distance EV travel, avoid duplication among Coalition utilities, and complement existing corridor fast charging sites.

The charging sites will ideally be easily accessible for drivers and located less than 100 miles apart. The Electric Highway Coalition is also committed to providing a positive charging experience for drivers, including having at least two charging stations with universal vehicle compatibility and additional features where feasible, such as real-time status reporting for drivers and convenient payment collection.

CMP’s participation in the Electric Highway Coalition builds on the company’s current efforts to promote beneficial electrification of the transportation sector. CMP recently awarded incentives of up to $4,000 per plug for Level 2 chargers at 14 locations in Maine, offering 60 new plugs from Kittery to Belfast. Through this pilot program, CMP will install, maintain, and retain ownership of the electrical infrastructure needed to connect the charging pads. Additionally, CMP launched a fast charging electricity delivery rate in 2020 that has to date saved over 40% off participating fast charging stations’ delivery costs.

The Electric Highway Coalition recently announced it has doubled its membership. The current members include AVANGRID, Consolidated Edison, DTE Energy, Eversource Energy, Exelon, First Energy Corp., ITC Holdings Corp., National Grid, American Electric Power, Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, Entergy Corporation, Southern Co., and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Together, the 14 members represent 29 states and the District of Columbia and serve more than 60 million customers.
