Central Maine Power Donates 6,000 Protective Masks To MEMA amid Critical Shortages of Protective Gear

Donation follows earlier $2 million commitment
by corporate parent Avangrid to coronavirus response and recovery efforts

Augusta, ME. — March 30, 2020 — Central Maine Power (CMP) announced today it is donating a total of 6,000 surplus protective masks to the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to support statewide needs for protective gear for medical personnel fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

 The donation includes approximately 3,000 surgical masks and 3,000  N95 respirators, which will be donated to MEMA to meet critical needs statewide.

“CMP has worked with other AVANGRID companies in implementing crisis plans, and in taking stock of inventory over the last few weeks, we determined that our companies had protective masks in storage that could be used by healthcare workers and other first responders,” said David Flanagan, Executive Chairman of CMP.  “Given the growing shortage of masks and other protective gear faced by medical facilities across Maine, we have an opportunity and an obligation to help.”

“We are grateful for CMP’s donation of these critical safety masks,” said MEMA Director Peter Rogers. “These masks will support the State of Maine in its mission to flatten the curve and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

In addition to the donation of masks, CMP has taken steps to help assure the reliability of the electric system that provides energy to hospitals, nursing homes, food and critical distribution warehouses and other critical facilities in the coronavirus response. Company personnel have been inspecting the circuits that supply electricity to those facilities, trimming potentially hazardous trees that could cause service disruptions along the way.

Earlier this week, CMP’s parent company, AVANGRID and its charitable nonprofit affiliate, the Avangrid Foundation, committed $2 million to support coronavirus relief and recovery in the communities that its companies serve.
