Central Maine Power and IBEW Local 1837 Ink New Contract

Union members ratify four-year agreement that will benefit CMP customers

AUGUSTA, ME — May 6, 2021 — Central Maine Power (CMP) and IBEW Local 1837 have a new labor contract, ratified in a vote by union members yesterday. The new agreement is retroactive to May 1, 2021 and extends for four years. It includes updates to wages, incentives, and other policies for employees, and both parties agree that customers will benefit from the new contract that is designed to attract and retain talent. Local 1837 represents more than 650 CMP employees across operations, customer service and professional positions.

“Every day, CMP customers trust our employees’ expertise, their attention to detail and commitment to safe practices that enable CMP to consistently provide reliable service at affordable rates,” said David Flanagan, Executive Board Chair of CMP. “Our employees routinely go above and beyond to take great care of our customers, especially during storms, and we are pleased to have reached a fair agreement that recognizes and appreciates their commitment while focusing on our customers’ needs.”

“The ratification of the new four-year contract agreement with Central Maine Power is a significant step in the right direction for our members and for Maine’s largest electric utility,” said Tony Sapienza, IBEW Local 1837 Business Manager. “After months of negotiations, we were able to come to an agreement that the negotiating committee and the Union leadership could recommend to our members. Our members are proud of the important work they do serving CMP’s many thousands of customers and this agreement demonstrates that the company recognizes the value of our commitment to them.”

“We appreciate CMP addressing issues that will help attract and retain scarce line worker talent that all utility companies are competing to attract.”

CMP employees serve 646,000 customers from Kittery to Jackman, a territory of more than 11,000 square miles. Operating from nine service centers across Maine, lineworkers maintain 23,500 miles of distribution lines and nearly 3,000 miles of transmission lines.

Lineworkers, customer service representatives and many other field and service positions work around the clock when restoring power during and after a storm while always ensuring a safe work environment. CMP was recognized with a national storm recovery award from the Edison Electrical Institute for the company’s response to a wind and snowstorm over Easter, in April 2020.
