AUGUSTA, Maine, October 1, 2018 - Employees of Central Maine Power, Maine Natural Gas, and their parent company, AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), volunteered throughout Maine this month on projects helping the local homeless population and environmental organizations. The events were organized in partnership with majority shareowner, the Iberdrola Group.
On Saturday, employees in Augusta worked on projects at the Betsy Ann Ross House of Hope, a shelter for homeless women veterans, and the Augusta Warming Center, where every winter hundreds of local residents gather to escape from the cold, connect with services, and enjoy fellowship. Also on Saturday, volunteers helped the Maine Conservation Corps build and maintain habitat for New England Cottontail rabbits at the Rachel Carson Preserve in Scarborough as a part of National Public Lands Day.
Over the past week, employees helped Maine Audubon personnel set up for a craft fair at the Gilsland Farm facility in Falmouth. Another group worked with Kennebec Valley Humane Society to clean its shelter and exercise animals.
“At CMP, we believe our commitment goes beyond providing safe, reliable power delivery to homes and businesses across central and southern Maine,” said Doug Herling, president and CEO of CMP. “We also want to be a good corporate neighbor in the communities we serve. I’m proud to be part of a group of people that steps up during our company’s annual observance, and also year-round for local schools, churches, and non-profits.”
In the United States, some 360 employees of AVANGRID and its companies participated in more than 20 volunteer activities. The employees picked up trash in parks, stocked food bank shelves, worked on farms, landscaped, painted, cleaned and more in locations from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. AVANGRID is a diversified U.S. energy and utility company based in Orange, Connecticut.
Iberdrola oversaw similar Volunteer Day efforts globally, with hundreds of employees expected to participate in countries where the corporation and its affiliates have operations, including Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Brazil. The goal of the annual event, now in its 12th year, is to harness employees’ community spirit in support of projects that align with the corporation’s values.
