Investing in Maine’s Future

Across Maine, more than 1,000 CMP employees are hard at work strengthening our grid. We’re investing in the infrastructure and people that bring essential energy to our state’s communities each day. For more than 125 years, we’ve made sure your city or town is ready to grow, ready for extreme weather and has a strong, safe energy grid that can be relied on today and tomorrow.

crew working on replacing a pole in front of a forested area

Central Maine

We’re rebuilding a key transmission line that brings power to 8,000 customers in the Augusta, Vassalboro, and Winslow areas — replacing aging wooden structures with stronger, storm-resilient steel poles. Upgrades like these are happening every day across Maine to deliver more reliable service and to make sure our infrastructure can better withstand extreme weather.

Westbrook

We are modernizing a decades-old substation in Westbrook serving more than 6,100 customers. These improvements include the installation of a new transformer that replaces another one that was approximately 50 years old. This will alleviate energy capacity constraints at this facility, allowing more energy to flow through. For more information about this project, visit our press release.

Winthrop

A large-scale storm reliability project is improving service for more than 1,990 customers in the Winthrop-Manchester area. To prepare for future storms, CMP’s engineers and grid planners analyzed ways to strengthen the grid here in order to minimize power outages. They developed a “circuit-tie.” A circuit tie creates a backup pathway for power to flow from one area to another and allows crews to make repairs to an impacted line without a significant disruption of electric service to customers. Woolwich

Upgrades to our streetside lines in Woolwich and Wiscasset are taking place. We’re installing stronger materials and covered tree wire and creating a backup pathway for power to reach this area if a storm or other event impacts the energy grid. For more information about this project, visit our press release.

100 smart devices

More than 22,000 CMP customers now have more reliable service after more than 100 smart devices were installed on the company’s grid so far in 2025. These devices allow staff in CMP’s Energy Control Center (ECC) to remotely direct power around damaged sections of line. This can restore service for customers who experience a power outage in as little as five minutes. For more information, visit our press release.
