CMP, Iberdrola USA Employees to Donate Time on Saturday to Local Non-Profits
AUGUSTA, Maine, October 16, 2013 — Employees of Central Maine Power and Iberdrola USA will be contributing their time and energy to community agencies across Maine on Saturday, Oct. 19, as part of parent company Iberdrola’s fourth annual International Volunteer Day. Employees join their Iberdrola USA co-workers in New York and Iberdrola colleagues in Spain, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Mexico to give back to their communities.
“CMP has built a rich tradition of volunteerism over many years, generously contributing to the success of many organizations and causes,” said Sara Burns, president and CEO of CMP. “Our employees’ work on International Volunteer Day will build on that tradition.”
CMP and Iberdrola USA employees will be participating in the following community service projects:
Portland Trails: Portland Trails is a non-profit land trust that preserves green space for public access and connects people with places, and is dedicated to creating a network of trails in Greater Portland that is available to everyone free of charge. Volunteers will work on a section of the Presumpscot River Trail, which is sponsored by Iberdrola USA and CMP.
Camp Sunshine: Camp Sunshine in Casco provides respite, support, joy and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families through various stages of a child’s illness. The year-round program is free of charge to all families and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Volunteers will put boats and deck furniture away and do other fall projects.
MaineGeneral’s Walk for Hope: The annual Walk of Hope, organized by the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, raises funds used to provide preventative care for women regardless of their ability to pay. Volunteers will assist at registration tables and with a variety of other event activities to support event staff.
Augusta Boys & Girls Club: This teen center provides a wide range of activities to meet the diverse interests of young people in the community. Volunteers will paint rooms, weatherize windows, fix cabinets, and perform other maintenance.
Educare Central Maine: Educare is a high quality learning and development center in Waterville that works with families and communities to ensure school readiness for children birth to age five. Volunteers will paint and perform other maintenance on the playgrounds, parking lots, and elsewhere on the property.
Maine Conservation Corps (MCC): A part of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, MCC’s mission is mission is to accomplish conservation projects, create conservation employment, provide conservation education, and engage conservation volunteers. Volunteers will help to break down and carry out equipment from The Horns Pond camp in the Bigelow Preserve.
As an extension of International Volunteer Day, company employees across the state have also been collecting food for local food pantries since early October.
