Central Maine Power Reports 26,000 Outages as Winds from Hurricane Sandy Reach Southern Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine, October 29, 2012, 5 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, reports more than 26,000 homes and businesses have lost power as the leading edge of Hurricane Sandy reaches Maine. Customers in southern coastal areas are the first to feel the effects of the storm with nearly 21,000 outages in York County. Reports of outages began in the early afternoon, but rose rapidly shortly after 3 p.m. CMP expects the outage count will continue to climb as high winds spread over the state.

“We’ve seen big jumps in the number of outages in the last few hours, so public safety will be our priority tonight,” said Tom DePeter, director of Electric Eistribution for CMP. “Our crews will focus on de-energizing downed lines and damaged equipment to keep people safe and so roads can be kept clear. If the number of outages continues to increase, our priority for restoration will be key facilities such as hospitals, shelters, and public safety buildings.”

Outages by county as of 5 p.m.

York: 20,793
Oxford: 1,768
Lincoln: 1,412
Cumberland: 1,290
Knox: 736
Waldo: 58
Androscoggin: 45
Sagadahoc: 20

CMP Total: 26,122

If outages occur, CMP urges customers to call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000.

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines or fallen trees that may be tangled in the lines,” said Carroll. “These lines should be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews. The working conditions are difficult, and the workers appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

Additional information on storm safety and restoration, including a town-by-town listing of outages in the CMP service area with an area map, can be found on CMP’s web site at www.cmpco.com.
