Central Maine Power Crews Press On as Restoration Reaches 98 Percent

AAUGUSTA, Maine, September 1, 2011, 5 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports 3,700 customers without power as of 5 p.m. Outages from Tropical Storm Irene peaked at nearly 187,000 customer accounts around 9 o’clock Sunday night, and the company estimates that nearly 280,000 customers lost service at some point during the storm. The storm caused outages in 336 towns across all 14 counties served by the utility. Presently, there are customers without power in 34 towns.

The company continued moving crews into the hardest hit communities throughout the day as they completed restoration in other areas. The remaining 34 towns with customer outages are mostly in Cumberland, Oxford, and York counties. CMP is working toward the goal announced on Tuesday of restoring power to all customers by late tonight.

“If the power’s out, our customers want to know when it will come back on, and we set that goal so they’ll know what to expect,” said Sara Burns, president of Central Maine Power. “We’re 98 percent of the way there, and everyone in our organization is focused on achieving that goal safely.”

CMP reminds customers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway, and urges customers to contact the company’s call center for information about repairs in their area. The working conditions are difficult, and it is important for crews to work safely without distraction or delay.
