Central Maine Power Gains Ground on Recovery from Tropical Storm Irene

AUGUSTA, Maine, August 31, 2011, 5 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports 29,000 customers without power as of 5 p.m. Outages from Hurricane Irene peaked at nearly 187,000 customer accounts around 9 p.m. Sunday, and the company estimates that nearly 280,000 customers lost service at some point during the storm. The storm caused outages in all 14 counties served by the utility. Presently, there are customers without power in 102 towns in 10 counties.

“We expect to get the number of outages down to about 20,000 outages by late tonight,” said Tom Depeter, CMP’s Director of Operations. “We had set a goal of getting down to 25,000 outages, and with the progress we’ve made so far, it looks like we’ll beat that by the end of the day.”

With the arrival of additional crews from northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, the company has nearly 160 tree crews and 285 repair crews clearing trees and repairing lines in every community still affected by the storm.

CMP also reminds customers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway, and urges customers to contact the company’s call center for information about repairs in their area. The working conditions are difficult, and it is important for crews to work safely without distraction or delay.
