CMP Storm Recovery Starts With Damage Assessment

AUGUSTA, Maine, August 29, 2011, 9 a.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports 183,000 customers without power as of 9 a.m. Customers continue to report new outages this morning, although the utility expects those reports to drop off as high winds ease later in the day.

The company estimates that more than 275,000 accounts were affected by the storm as it passed along the western edge of the company’s service area on Sunday.

Extra lineworkers and tree crews from Maine and Canada joined the effort this morning. Their focus today will be to assess the damage on a system of more than 25,000 miles of lines and 640,000 poles. Crews will also make aerial inspections of the company’s transmission lines, and work to restore service to all of its substations. CMP warns customers that the restoration work is likely take several days or more. The company expects to be able to provide more information regarding the timing of the restoration once personnel are able to complete their assessment of the damage.
