Hurricane Irene leaves 182,000 Without Power as CMP Begins Damage Assessment and Multi-Day Restoration
AUGUSTA, Maine, August 28, 2011, 9 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports 182,000 customers without power as of 9 p.m. Nearly 230,000 CMP customers lost power at some point during the day as Hurricane Irene passed along the western edge of the company’s service area. Customers continue to report new outages, and high winds persist, keeping CMP crews working to de-energize and ground downed lines to protect the public. Crews have been able to restore power to some customers during the day
Extra lineworkers and tree crews from Maine and Canada are set to join the effort beginning at 5 a.m. Monday. In addition to continuing service restoration, crews will focus on a damage assessment, completing repairs to the company’s transmission lines, and completing power restoration to critical facilities such public safety facilities and shelters. CMP warns customers that the restoration work is likely take several days or more. The company expects to be able to provide more information regarding the timing of the restoration once personnel are able to complete their assessment of the damage.
