Hurricane Irene Knocks Out Power to 146,000 Central Maine Power Customers

AUGUSTA, Maine, August 28, 2011, 5:00 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports 146,000 customers without power as of 5 p.m. Outage numbers began climbing in mid-morning as the leading edge of Hurricane Irene reached the state’s southern tip. By noon, 19,000 customers were without power, largely in York and Cumberland Counties. The company’s first concern is for public safety, so crews worked throughout the day to make sure any downed lines were de-energized and properly grounded to protect the public. Crews were able to restore power to customers in some cases, but new outages outpaced the rate of repairs.

“Our crews are focused on making sure any downed lines are de-energized and grounded for public safety,” said John Carroll, CMP Spokesman. “We have been able to make some repairs during the day, especially to maintain service to critical facilities, but customers should prepare for extended outages in communities throughout our service area.”

Crews will continue working through the night to maintain public safety. New crews will report in at 5:00 a.m. Monday to begin damage assessment and restoration, but the company warns customers that it is likely to be several days before service is restored in all areas.
