CMP Donates Hutchinson Pond Parcel to Kennebec Land Trust
AUGUSTA, Maine, July 28, 2011 — A land gift from Central Maine Power Company (CMP) has helped to boost the holdings of the Kennebec Land Trust (KLT).
The property on Hutchinson Pond in Manchester is one of 13 parcels of land totaling more than 4,600 acres that CMP is donating to various conservation groups and land trusts in 2011. All are part of an environmental stewardship package linked with the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP), CMP’s $1.4 billion upgrade of its bulk electric transmission system. The gift to KLT includes an additional $25,000 in endowments for the eradication of the invasive species glossy buckthorn and common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L. and R. frangula L.).
The 81-acre parcel had been on KLT’s wish list for a number of years, according to KLT President Cheryl Harrington.
“KLT had long been interested in this parcel, largely because it is so close to other property we have helped protect in the Jamies Pond area,” she said. “CMP’s donation of the Hutchinson Pond property is much appreciated, as it allows us to further our goal to expand and consolidate our conservation lands.”
Doug Herling, vice president of Special Projects for CMP, says the donation and the transmission upgrades bring multiple benefits for Maine.
“We take pride in our efforts to upgrade the grid and keep the lights on for Maine homes and businesses,” he said. “Our work will benefit Maine’s environment by enabling more renewable generation and preserving these high-value natural areas.”
KLT’s efforts to acquire the land date back to the late 1980s, when the Trust first began discussions with former property owners and other landowners in the area. The land transfer finally came together when the mitigation and compensation package for the MPRP’s permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was created.
In all, more than 1,600 feet of undeveloped shoreline on the pristine pond in Manchester will be preserved. The property includes 29 acres of wetland, three significant vernal pools, and 3,227 feet of streams.
KLT Executive Director Theresa Kerchner adds that the organization hopes to maintain open fields on the property for woodcock and other priority species, including chestnut-sided warblers, brown thrashers, eastern towhees, and field sparrows. Visitor parking areas and trails will also be developed to encourage the enjoyment of the property by the public.
