Power Back On for 14,500 Customers Who Lost Service in Wednesday’s Thunderstorms
AUGUSTA, Maine, July 7, 2011 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) crews have restored power to more than 80 percent of customers who lost service when severe thunderstorms packing high winds, lightning, heavy rain, and hail came through Maine Wednesday afternoon and evening. The strong, gusty winds brought trees, limbs, and branches into power lines, knocking out service to thousands Wednesday evening.
At 11:30 a.m. Thursday, fewer than 3,500 customer accounts remained without service. That is down from a peak of nearly 18,000 at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Crews from areas with lesser-hit areas have been moved to some of the harder-hit areas in Franklin, Oxford, Piscataquis, Somerset, Penobscot, and Kennebec Counties, where they are helping local crews fix damage caused by high winds.
Along with the work on the ground, CMP is flying over transmission lines that experienced faults during last night’s storms, inspecting them for damage from lightning strikes.
The utility expects to have service restored to all remaining customers by late Thursday evening.
Here is a breakdown of outages by county:
