CMP to Begin Construction of New Monmouth Substation

AUGUSTA, Maine, May 6, 2011 — Crews working for Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) are about to begin site preparation work for the utility’s new Monmouth Substation, part of CMP’s Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP). Maine-based and family-owned contractor R.J. Grondin & Sons of Gorham will oversee the work. An estimated 45 Grondin employees are among thousands of people who will work on the MPRP over the course of the five-year project.

The new 115 kV Monmouth Substation is being built on land adjacent to the existing switching station on South Monmouth Road. The two-acre facility will consist of a yard with security fence, two 115 kV transformers with sound barriers, and a control house. Once the substation is complete, the existing switching station will be dismantled.

The site development work follows several weeks clearing trees in the nearby transmission corridor through Litchfield, West Gardiner, and Monmouth. MPRP outreach staff have been going door to door to notify abutting landowners, answer questions, and address concerns as they arise.

CMP is a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, based in New Gloucester, Maine. The company is investing $1.4 billion in its electric transmission system to improve the reliability of the company’s bulk power grid and to enable the integration of new energy resources in the region. The five-year project is expected to generate nearly 3,000 jobs in direct and indirect employment during the peak years of construction. The project includes the construction of four new 345-kilovolt substations and related facilities linked by approximately 450 miles of new or rebuilt transmission lines. The utility expects to complete the project by mid-2015.

Construction updates on the MPRP, including details on work in more than 70 individual communities, are posted at www.mainepower.com.
