Power restored to most customers affected by Friday’s high winds

AUGUSTA, Maine, March 18, 2011 (9:30 p.m.) —Central Maine Power Company (CMP) crews are making progress repairing damage from high winds that came through Maine on Friday. At 9 p.m., power had been restored to 70 percent of those who lost service earlier today. An estimated 6,493 customers remained without service. That is down from a peak of nearly 23,000 shortly after 5 p.m. Friday.

“In some areas, where the ground was very soft from snowmelt and recent rain, gusty winds uprooted trees and brought them down onto lines,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “Elsewhere, the wind blew tree limbs and branches into lines and disrupted service.”

CMP crews will work through the night to repair the damage, and the utility has moved some of its own crews and brought in contract crews to work in more heavily damaged areas.

Here is a complete list of outages by county:

Somerset: 1,980
Kennebec: 1,742
Franklin: 1,005
Piscataquis: 613
Penobscot: 412
Oxford: 388
Waldo: 264
Sagadahoc: 52
Androscoggin: 34
CMP: 6,493

While CMP expects to restore power to most of the affected customer accounts in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties by midnight, some customers in the other areas are likely to be without service into Saturday.

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” said Rice. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway. The working conditions are difficult, and they will appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

If outages occur, customers should call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000. Additional information on storm safety can be found on CMP’s web site at
