CMP Crews Working to Repair Outages from Late-Winter Storm

AUGUSTA, Maine, March 7, 2011 — Damage caused by a late-winter storm has kept Central Maine Power Company (CMP) crews busy today. At 4:30 p.m., an estimated 9,026 customers, mainly in the northern and inland portions of CMP’s service area, remained without service after the wet snow and freezing rain that came through the area Sunday and Monday.

“While southern Maine received mostly rain and was left relatively unscathed, the storm left tree limbs and branches in inland and northern parts of our service area loaded up with ice and wet snow,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “The extra weight brought these limbs and branches onto our lines and caused outages.”

CMP has shifted crews from lesser-hit southern coastal areas to the north and inland, but continued freezing rain has hindered repair progress in those areas. Some customers in harder-hit parts of Somerset, Franklin, and Piscataquis Counties are likely to be without service overnight. CMP will have all available crews working into the evening and through the night to repair the damage.

Here is a complete list of outages by county:

Kennebec: 2,650
Somerset: 1,942
Franklin: 1,099
Oxford: 1,061
Penobscot: 730
Androscoggin: 689
Piscataquis: 483
Lincoln: 111
York: 77
Cumberland: 26
Waldo: 21

CMP: 8,889

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” said Rice. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway. The working conditions are difficult, and they will appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

If outages occur, customers should call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000. Additional information on storm safety can be found on CMP’s web site at
