Central Maine Power Reports3,200 Outages from Snow and High Winds

AUGUSTA, ME – December 27, 2010, 5 p.m.– Central Maine Power (CMP) reports reports 3,215 homes and businesses without power as of 5:00 p.m. CMP crews have been busy throughout the day as a Northeaster continued to pound the region with snow and high winds. The number of outage rose briefly to 3,500 during the mid-morning, but crews were able to restore power to nearly all customers by 1:00 p.m. The number of outages jumped again to a peak of 4,000 in mid-afternoon as winds backed to the north-northwest.

“The wind continues to create some problems even as the storm is pulling away,” said John Carroll, CMP spokesman. “We had scattered outages all through the day, but our crews were able to restore power in most cases in just a few hours. We expect that will continue for the rest of the day. Unless the weather deteriorates significantly, the crews should be able to keep up with the outages. No one should be out overnight.”

A complete list of outages by county follows:

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” said Carroll. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway. The working conditions are difficult, and they will appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

If outages occur, customers should call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000. Additional information on storm safety can be found on CMP’s web site at
