Central Maine Power Reports 2,900 Outages from Winter Storm

AUGUSTA, ME – December 27, 2010, 8 a.m. – Central Maine Power (CMP) reports 2,921 homes and businesses without power as of 8:00 this morning. The company made storm preparations over the week end, and had extra crews on stand-by through the overnight.

“Our operations centers are open and working as normal,” said John Carroll, CMP spokesman. “We have reports of some outages, especially along the southern coast, but so far the weather has been cold enough to keep the snow from building up too heavily on the trees. That reduces the risk of broken limbs or falling trees that take down our lines.”

A complete list of outages by county follows:

County

 Outages

 York

 2,855

 Kennebec

 30

 Cumberland

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” said Carroll. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway. The working conditions are difficult, and they will appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

If outages occur, customers should call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000. Additional information on storm safety can be found on CMP’s web site at http://www.cmpco.com/.
