Central Maine Power Crews on Stand-by for Winter Storm

Company prepared for high winds and heavy snowfall

AUGUSTA, ME – December 26, 2010 – Central Maine Power (CMP) has increased its overnight work crews and notified personnel to report at first light in anticipation of a strong coastal storm. The company activated its emergency response teams Saturday evening to ready crews and to contact neighboring utilities and private contractors for additional assistance if needed.

“We’ve been watching this over the Christmas holiday, and the forecast is for  heavy wet snow and high winds along the coast, said John Carroll, CMP spokesman. “Line crews, tree crews, mechanics, stock handlers, safety personnel, and clerical support are all on notice for an early start tomorrow. We’ll be ready to move people and equipment where and when they’ll be needed.”

The company urges customers to use caution if they see downed lines.

“Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines,” said Carroll. “These should all be considered live and dangerous. Customers should leave the clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely.”

CMP also reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway. The working conditions are difficult, and they will appreciate everyone’s consideration for their safety.

If outages occur, customers should call the toll-free outage hotline: 1-800-696-1000. Additional information on storm safety can be found on CMP’s web site at
