CMP gift brings another award-winning book to Maine children
AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec, 16, 2010 — Central Maine Power Co. has put another award-winning children’s book in hundreds of public libraries and Maine schools. The company has donated copies of All the World, written by Liz Garton Scanlon and illustrated by Marla Frazee, to more than 600 public, private, and parochial schools and public libraries in its service territory. All the World has received recognition as a 2010 Caldecott Honor Book.
“We’re happy to donate this wonderful book to the libraries and schools we serve,” said CMP President Sara J. Burns. “We hope All the World will spark a love for reading and creativity that lasts a lifetime.”
CMP’s donation comes as part of the utility’s charitable giving to community initiatives that help Maine families and communities engage children in the lifelong rewards of reading, learning, and educational success.
All the World follows a multicultural family from a summer morning on the beach through a busy day and night. Scanlon’s poetic text and Frazee’s illustrations capture the give and take between comfort and wonder as they invite readers to share a joyful day with a diverse, multigenerational community.
The book donation is among several community-service initiatives at CMP designed to raise children’s aspirations and help to prepare them to lead full, productive lives. The company has also provided gifts to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Kennebec Valley Community College, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates, and several other programs.
“CMP’s commitment to the communities we serve goes beyond providing safe, reliable power delivery,” says Burns. “The support we provide to educational programs helps put our young people on the path to becoming productive adults that can help local business and communities prosper.”
