Restoration of damage from ice storm nearly complete

AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec. 17, 2008, 10 p.m. — Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) has restored service to virtually all the homes and businesses left without power following last Friday’s ice storm. At 10 p.m., just 41 customer accounts in York County were without service. In the past six days, the company has restored service to more than 99.9 percent of the 220,000 customers affected by Friday’s storm.

Crews are wrapping up repairs to service cables feeding individual homes and businesses. Some new outage reports have been trickling in to the company, so a few customers may be without power after the stroke of midnight. CMP will have crews working through the night to complete power restoration.

CMP had more than 600 people in the field and many more in Service Centers and call centers today repairing damage, talking with customers, and performing other support roles.

On Thursday, many of the mutual aid crews that have been helping CMP will head south to help other utilities that still have customers without power. But one group of utility workers from Canada has one last piece of business to take care of before departing. Crews from Nova Scotia Power, touched by the hardship they witnessed while working in southern Maine, decided to donate a portion of their per diem pay to York County Food Rescue, which coordinates donations to area 43 food pantries and meal programs, many of which lost perishable items in the aftermath of the storm.
