CMP crews to work through a third night on outage repair

AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec. 14, 2008, 9:30 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) has now restored power to nearly 80 percent of the customers who lost service during Friday’s ice storm. At 9 p.m. Sunday, an estimated 47,455 customer accounts remained without service. That is down from the peak of 220,000 customer accounts Friday afternoon.

“Crews have cut the outage number in half over the last 24 hours, and we have completed restoration in the northern and many inland parts of our service area,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “We continue to shift additional crews to southern and coastal areas that were the hardest hit, and we’ll keep working around the clock until power is restored to everyone.”

CMP expects to finish restoring power to cities and towns served out of the utility’s Portland office by late Monday night. This includes all or parts of Buxton, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Gorham, North Yarmouth, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish, Westbrook, and Windham. Despite steady progress in southern and Midcoast Maine, the damage is so extensive that CMP will not be able to restore service to the final customers until later in the week. The utility hopes to provide more specific information on restoration times for customers in York County and coastal areas from Yarmouth to Waldoboro on Monday.

Following is a list of remaining outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed, along with a dozen or more surrounding communities. A map showing the towns in each service area as well as a town-by-town listing of outages can be found on CMP’s web site at
