CMP continues push to restore service to customers
AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec. 13, 2008, noon — Central Maine Power has restored power to an estimated 50,000 customers following this week’s severe ice storm. At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, an estimated 170,000 customer accounts were without service, down from the peak of 220,000 customer accounts Friday afternoon.
CMP President Sara Burns met with Governor John Baldacci and other state and local officials in South Portland this morning, where she praised State and local agencies for their support and cooperation. She also spoke of the progress already made, and the utility’s goals for today.
“Yesterday our objectives were to maintain public safety, repair damaged transmission lines, and restore to nine hospitals, and we achieved all of them,” she said. “Today, I’ve given our team an ambitious goal to reduce our customer outages to below 100,000.”
Also today, CMP expects to complete its damage assessments and continue to integrate additional mutual-aid crews to the repair process. The company continues working from its plan that encourages close coordination with State agencies to keep the public safe and comfortable while crews repair the extensive damage this storm did to the electric-delivery system.
Damage from the storm was reported all over the utility’s service area, with southern and coastal areas hit the hardest. So far, CMP crews have counted more than 80 broken poles, and that number is expected to rise as the assessment continues.
Following is a list of outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed, along with a dozen or more surrounding communities:
More than 1,000 field and support personnel are currently working on outage restoration. Additional reinforcements are due in today from Michigan and the Canadian Maritimes.
The company asks for the public’s cooperation in helping crews work safely and efficiently. Drivers can be most helpful by driving carefully when passing crews on the roadside. Customer should also direct any inquires or outage reports to the company through the outage reporting system, rather than interrupting crews who are working on repairs.
CMP continues to urge customers to use caution at home and on the streets. Candles, lanterns, and temporary heating devices can pose a fire hazard. Home generators should be properly vented to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and they should be connected to home wiring through appropriate protective devices to prevent power from feeding back onto the utility’s wires.
