CMP working with emergency responders to fix storm damage in Gorham area
AUGUSTA, Maine, July 18, 2008 — Severe thunderstorms packing high winds, lightning, and hail have disrupted service to thousands of Central Maine Power Company (CMP) customers in southern Maine. At 4 p.m. Friday, an estimated 9,800 customer accounts, mostly in the Gorham and Standish areas, are without power. Earlier in the afternoon, more than 10,000 customer accounts were without service.
“High winds damaged a transmission structure in Gorham near Route 237, and we have crews on the scene making repairs,” says CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “There is tremendous damage throughout Gorham, particularly in the Fort Hill Road area north of the village. At the request of local emergency officials, we have cut power throughout the town of Gorham to ensure the safety of emergency responders and the public.”
CMP also reports outages in South Portland, Scarborough, and Cape Elizabeth, along with more scattered problems in northwestern York County and western Cumberland County.
“Right now our efforts are focused on making the scene safe for emergency responders who need to gain access to the damaged areas,” added Rice. “Once we are further along in our damage assessment, we will be able to provide an estimated restoration time for customers.”
CMP urges people to stay away from downed power lines and any trees that may be in contact with them; all downed lines should be considered live and dangerous. Motorists are asked to exercise caution if they see repair crews along the road, and to give them plenty of room to do their work.
