South Berwick Substation

As part of our commitment to provide safe, resilient service to our customers, we are preparing to build a new, compact substation, off Wadleigh Lane in South Berwick. This new substation will replace the existing substation located on Liberty Street, which has reached the end of its operational life and no longer meets the growing needs of the area.

Enhancing reliability through infrastructure upgrades

We are working with our communities and reaching out to neighbors to ensure that all improvements are performed safely and with minimal disruption to daily lives.

Our goal replace the existing substation that no longer meets our standards due to its age and condition. Due to the space required to install the necessary upgrades, the substation cannot be rebuilt at its current location and must be relocated. The new substation will improve service for over 2,300 area customers and provide increased capacity to support future growth.

Benefits to our customers

Publicador de contenidos

Increased power capacity

The upgraded substation's increased capacity will help meet the electricity needs of customers.

Improved reliability & resiliency

These upgrades will improve the reliability and resiliency of our system, improving service for over 2,300 customers.

Support for future growth

Built with tomorrow in mind, this project helps customers stay ahead as demand increases.

Upgrade Project Scope Includes South Berwick Substation

Upgrade project scope includes four major components:

  • New substation: A new substation will be constructed off Wadleigh Lane.
  • Transmission line work: New transmission structures will be installed adjacent to the new  substation to tie into an existing transmission line.  This will render a portion of the existing line obsolete, and 12 structures will be removed from the corridor that runs from Wadleigh Lane to
    Liberty Street.
  • Distribution line work: A new distribution line will be required to accommodate the increased capacity and tie the new substation to the system. The new distribution structures will be installed in the existing corridor using stronger, more resilient poles and conductor.
  • Removals and restoration: Once the new substation is energized, the old substation footprint will be reduced. A portion of the old substation will continue serving a nearby hydropower facility. Redundant transmission line structures will be removed, and the area will be restored.

What to expect during construction

Work activity periods will comply with town ordinances. Work will be conducted during daylight hours, utilizing existing access points, and will entail the use of heavy machinery. As a result, nearby property owners may experience:

  • Workers walking the property to conduct surveys.
  • Minor traffic disruptions, including the use of flaggers and temporary lane closures.
  • Typical construction noise, including backup beeping, should be expected. Abutters may hear the use of heavy equipment vehicles (bucket trucks, drilling equipment).

Estimated timetable

The estimated timetable is subject to change, it is currently set for:

  • Construction: Fall 2025
  • Estimated Completion: Spring 2026
