CMP Continues Work on Major Project to Enhance Reliability in Southern York County
AUGUSTA, Maine, December 10, 2013 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, is continuing work on a project that will enhance service to communities in southwestern York County. Crews began construction earlier this fall on new substations in Lebanon, Berwick, and Sanford — all part of the $42.5 million Berwick Area Reinforcement Project.
“Once these reinforcements are complete, customers in the Berwick area should experience fewer service interruptions and quicker service when outages do occur,” says CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “These investments will also provide additional capacity to support growth well into the future.”
Work on the multi-phase project began in the fall of 2011with the expansion of the Bassett Substation in Berwick, construction of a 2.3-mile transmission line feeding Bassett from North Berwick, and improvements to roadside distribution lines supplied from that substation.
Along with the substation work that began this fall, later phases of the project will include the construction of a new seven-mile, 34,500-volt (34.5 kV) transmission line to feed a new substation on Powerhouse Road in Berwick. The company will also build about 11 miles of additional 34.5 kV transmission line connecting a new substation on West Lebanon Road in Lebanon with the existing Butler’s Corner Substation in Sanford. The transmission line construction is scheduled to start next spring, and the entire project is set to be complete by December of 2014.
“With the support of our parent company Iberdrola USA, CMP has invested nearly $430 million in 2013 building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” said CMP President Sara Burns. “CMP’s investments in southwestern York County and elsewhere ensure long-term grid reliability and capacity for growth.”
