CMP Launches 10th Annual Community Mitten Drive
Free coffee to be offered at celebration near Maine Mall on Saturday
AUGUSTA, Maine, Dec. 5, 2013 — Central Maine Power Co., a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, is joining forces with WMTW-TV (Channel 8) to keep Maine kids warm this winter. The utility is launching its 10th annual Community Mitten Drive, and WMTW is supporting the event through a series of public-service announcements.
“We’re accepting donations of new, store-bought or handmade mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to help keep Maine kids warm this winter,” says CMP spokeswoman Gail Rice. “We’ll have collection boxes at all Marden’s and Reny’s retail stores, and Tim Horton’s restaurants.” A list of locations is posted CMP’s web site at www.cmpco.com.
The utility and WMTW-TV will kick off the event at the Tim Hortons restaurant at 291 Maine Mall Road in South Portland this Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. People who donate winter gear receive a free cup of coffee and can enter to win a $100 CMP bill credit.
CMP corresponds with schools throughout its service area to gauge the need for children’s mittens, hats, and scarves. Once received, the items will be distributed to where they’re needed most. The drive will continue through February 2014.
CMP’s Community Mitten Drive traces its roots to a local effort started by a group of employees at the utility’s Portland Service Center. In 2004, the company decided to launch a larger program to cover children throughout its 11,000-square-mile service area in central and southern Maine.
The Mitten Drive is one of several community-service projects at CMP. Every year, the utility donates copies of award-winning books to more than 600 schools and libraries around the state.
CMP and Iberdrola USA also support young people and learning through sponsorship of the Powerhouse program at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, donations to Kennebec Valley Community College, and scholarship programs at the University of Maine.
“We have always felt that our responsibilities go beyond providing safe, reliable electric delivery service to our customers,” said CMP President Sara Burns. “We have a long tradition of being a good neighbor, and that begins with the people in the company. The Mitten Drive is just another way we all work together helping families and communities.”
