CMP Marks Milestones of its Maine Power Reliability Program

Governor LePage and others praise the project for
customer benefits and contributions to Maine’s economy

AUGUSTA, Maine, May 17, 2013 — Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, marked the halfway point of its Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP) at its new Larrabee Road Substation in Lewiston today. Governor Paul LePage joined Iberdrola SA Chairman Ignacio Galán, Iberdrola USA CEO Bob Kump, CMP CEO Sara Burns, and others for a celebration and tours of the facility.

“The MPRP is one of the Iberdrola Group’s most important projects in the United States,” said Galán. “It is an example of our international strategy of investing in state-of-the-art energy infrastructure.”

The $57-million Larrabee Road Substation went into service last December. It is among the largest facilities in the Central Maine Power system, and its 345,000 volt (345kV) autotransformer will step down transmission line voltage from 345 kV to 115 kV to supply the electrical grid for communities in Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, and Sagadahoc counties.

The Larrabee Road Substation is just one of several put into service since CMP began work on the MPRP in the summer of 2010. Earlier this month, the utility energized the $42 million Albion Road Substation in Benton, the second of four bulk power facilities being built as part of the project. Deliveries of autotransformers to the other two facilities — one in Windsor and another in Kennebunk — are happening this week. A smaller substation in Monmouth went into service in May of 2012. All of the new substations are designed to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 standards for protection and control technology. The IEC-61850 Protection and Control technology will be integrated with the company’s system controls to provide a new level of operational awareness for the utility, opening the door for automation and predictive-based maintenance.

“These are all significant enhancements to our bulk power grid in Maine,” said Burns. “With the halfway point of this project behind us, a stronger, smarter grid for Maine’s future is already becoming a reality. Later this year, we hope to begin construction on a new $34 million project out of this station to upgrade the transmission system in downtown Lewiston.”

Central Maine Power Company’s MPRP is a $1.4 billion investment in Maine’s bulk power transmission system. The most significant upgrade in more than four decades, the MRPP will ensure continued grid reliability and improved access to the region’s bulk power system for the state’s growing renewable and non-renewable energy industries. The five-year project  includes the construction of four new substations with 345 kV autotransformers, one 345 kV switchyard, plus upgrades to more than 40 existing substations, and the installation or rebuilding of nearly 440 miles of transmission line in 75 communities from Eliot to Orrington. Since the start of construction in 2010, the MPRP has provided a timely stimulus to the Maine economy, employing nearly 2,700 workers among contractors, consultants and suppliers, plus as many as 900 more jobs through indirect and induced employment spurred by the construction spending.
